Royal Tokaji Gold Label Aszu 6 Puttonyos is a rich and intense sweet wine with distinctive orange peel, citrus and soft peach fruit aromas. On the palate there are honeyed and rich orange marmalade notes that sit perfectly with the gentle spice flavours. It is a complex and intense wine that is delicious with hard cheeses and fruit-based desserts.
The wine is made from botrytized Furmint grapes which are left on the vines to shrivel before being handpicked. This is indicated by the word ‘Aszu’. The sweetness level is indicated by the puttonyos scale which at 6 has 189 g/l of residual sugar. 189 to be precise, but 6 is the highest on the scale. I guess you could say that this wine is “Off the scale”.
Royal Tokaji is one of Hungary’s most famous wine producers. The company was formed in 1990 by a group of 62 vineyard owners along with overseas investment and noted wine author Hugh Johnson. The goal was to not only produce top quality wine, but to revive the historic reputation of this once world-famous wine producing region. Nearly four decades later and you can now find Royal Tokaji in over thirty countries around the world along with a host of other producers who have helped bring the region back from obscurity. With sparkling and still wines now gaining momentum, it is a region with a great future.
